Hi. My cat likes to sit on the inside of his cat flap and look out. Very lazy I know... My question is - While my cat is sat close to the Cat Porte while indoors will the microchip reader detect him and allow the door to open? I am currently looking at the infra red Staywell option but because of the obvious proximty issue I have decided to shop around. Many thanks.

Hi Nick - I have the petporte flap and my cat likes to do the same thing - he even has a little platform/launch pad on the floor inside that he sits on to view outside as the flap is higher up in the door than normal ones due to the type of panelled door I have. Anyway he's certainly never been scanned while sitting there - the inside part of the flap is just flush against the door so he has to be under the scanner outside to be read. I highly recommend the petporte - it's been fantastic as we had a really bad case of intruders coming in day and night and though it's more expensive than other flaps we've definitely saved money on feeding the rest of the street! Our cat took to it straight away and it scans him and unlocks very quickly - we got him chipped with the Bayer Tracer chip as that was the one recommended on here as being the fastest reader. Good luck!

Thanks for the great info... I am lucky that I don't have an intruder problem, just a very cowardly cat. Louis likes to be able to run away and and escape quickly. I curently have the magnetic cat flap but the magnet keeps getting stuck to other metal parts of the the collar so not hanging low enough to work. Everything about the Cat Porte sounds brilliant it was just the range issue that was worrying me a bit. Thanks for you help Loulou...

You're very welcome - we didn't actually have much option with flaps as our cat is a 4 year old stray who appeared about a year ago with no collar and not chipped (and didn't give us any choice about the fact that he wanted to live here!) so we were worried about suddenly putting a collar on him. Naively we put in a bog-standard cheap flap and soon had about 10 cats in and out constantly scaring him and eating his food - plus jumping on the bed at 4am and scaring me!! As far as Louis being able to get in quickly - the flap certainly scans Rocky and opens as soon as his head is under it, but as I said above we got the vet to get hold of a Bayer Tracer chip for us for him as Petporte recommended this as the fastest one to scan. It was a bit of a bugger to put in but that's because my back door wasn't thick enough so we solved the problem by screwing on an additional square of wood - there was a bit of swearing and sweating from my other half but it was worth it in the end! Best of luck!

| The microchip cat flap reads all 15 digit microchips including Identichip, Bayer Tracer, Petlog, Verbac, AVID and others. There are so many we cannot list them all but those are the ones that are most used. If your cat stays close to the window it will not open the cat flap for a cat on the other side because the microchip sensor coil is located on the outside part of the cat flap.
